Gmail to get a major redesign & some cool new features:
Google has recently announced that its going to overhaul Gmail’s desktop version and make it look much similar to its mobile version. The new design has not been launched as of yet, but a noted publisher has managed to get some screenshots of the test-version which Google is currently working on.

Razer Phone’s rival is finally here in the shape of Xiaomi’s own Black Shark phone. The gaming focused phone comes with top of the line specifications all for a rock bottom price. Telenor Pakistan wins 4 awards at 8th PAS awards

Samsung securities employee makes a $105 billion blunder:
A Samsung subsidiary, Samsung Securities, which specializes in financial services and brokerage lost 12% market value in a few minutes after an employee “accidentally” issued 1,000 shares to each employee. The employee, whose name and designation are undisclosed, was supposed to give a dividend to employees in a compensation plan. The compensatory dividend was supposed to be worth 1,000 won (South Korean currency) and while trying to issue it, the employee accidentally gave out 1,000 shares per employee resulting in a total outflow of 2.83 billion shares worth $105 billion.

New flagship phones are immensely popular in China, with millions selling within minutes. A similar feat was accomplished by Huawei P20 and P20 Pro, which were released last Thursday in the country. HTC U12+ to come with dual front and back cameras and more:
The smartphone industry saw major flagships enter the market between 2017 and 2018 – most manufacturers, including Xiaomi and Samsung, have already launched their flagships for this year and HTC is among the few companies which have not yet done so. Facebook seeks facial recognition consent in EU and Canada:
Facebook has started asking European and Canadian users to let it use facial recognition technology to identify them in photos and videos. Facebook originally began face-matching users outside Canada in 2011, but stopped doing so for EU citizens the following year after protests from regulators and privacy campaigners. The new request is one of several opt-in permissions being rolled out in advance of a new data privacy law.

Steep rise in child abuse images online:
The Internet Watch Foundation says it is finding more images of child sexual abuse online than ever before, according to its annual report. It found over 78,000 website addresses containing child sexual abuse in 2017, up from more than 57,000 in 2016. The charity actively seeks and removes these images from the net as well as responding to reports it receives from the public.

Ikea app taskrabbit reveals security breach:
Ikea’s odd jobs marketplace TaskRabbit is investigating a “cyber-security incident”, the company has announced. The app and website let people find freelance workers to complete household tasks such as cleaning, gardening or assembling flat-pack furniture. TaskRabbit has not revealed the nature of the incident, but said it was working with law enforcement and a cyber-security firm to investigate.

Russia’s telegram block hits web users:
Russian web users are reporting problems accessing online services as a result of the authorities’ bid to block the Telegram messaging app.
Russia’s media regulator has blocked more than 4 million IP addresses after a court approved its request to shut the app down.
Telegram is reportedly using the addresses to get around the block.

T-Mobile fined over false ringtones:
Mobile phone network T-Mobile has agreed to pay $40m (£27m) after claims by the US government that it used false ringtones when calls could not be connected in rural areas. This would have given the impression that the calls were going unanswered rather than not connecting. The settlement was negotiated by the Federal Communications Commission. T-Mobile said the issue was “unintentional” and had been “corrected” in January 2017.

Russia to block telegram app over encryption:
A court in Moscow has approved a request from the Russian media regulator to block the Telegram messaging app immediately. The media regulator sought to block the app because the firm had refused to hand over encryption keys used to scramble messages. Security officials say they need to monitor potential terrorists.

For two months in early 2018, technology journalist Kashmir Hill let innocent household items spy on her. She had turned her one-bedroom apartment into a “smart home” and was measuring how much data was being collected by the firms that made the devices. Her smart toothbrush betrayed when she had not brushed her teeth, her television revealed when she had spent the day bingeing on programmes, and her smart speaker spoke to the world’s largest online retailer every day.

Alphabet firm’s tools to combat extremism:
The online methods used by Jihadist groups to recruit members and the way Google is countering them, have been revealed at the TED (Technology, Entertainment and Design) conference. The research director of Alphabet-owned Jigsaw gave a talk outlining the tools the firm is developing to ease extremist content and harassment. Google faces scrutiny over how it deals with both.

Google loses ‘right to be forgotten’ case:
A businessman fighting for the “right to be forgotten” has won a UK High Court action against Google. The man, who has not been named due to reporting restrictions surrounding the case, wanted search results about a past crime he had committed removed from the search engine. The judge, Mr Justice Mark Warby, ruled in his favour on Friday.

Donkey kong champion loses title for ‘using emulator’:
The Donkey Kong world champion has been stripped of a record he set for the 1981 arcade classic following claims he did not use an original machine. Twin Galaxies, which tracks video games records, believes that Billy Mitchell’s 1,047,200 score on the original Donkey Kong was achieved using an emulator. An emulator is a computer program that replicates an arcade or console machine. Twin Galaxies was alerted by Donkey Kong forum moderator Jeremy Young.

Tesla ‘removed’ from fatal car crash probe:
Tesla has been removed from the investigation into the fatal crash of one of its semi-autonomous vehicles. In March, a Tesla vehicle operating in Autopilot mode crashed in California, killing the driver. Tesla has suggested the driver was at fault.
