Court Bans Uber from Operating Services It Doesn’t Offer in Pakistan:
Uber has been told not to operate certain services in Sindh and Balochistan after a Pakistani citizen filed a lawsuit against it. According to the petitioner, Uber stole his idea of insurance for a mobile ride-hailing service and had violated copyright laws. The decision was passed by an intellectual property tribunal for Sindh and Balochistan. An interim order was passed on Saturday over the case filed by Zafeerul Haq Qasmi Pirzada against Google, Uber and others. His counsel Kamran Iqbal stated that Pirzada is a Pakistani owner of IP relating to ‘short-term digital insurance.

PTI Moves to Withdraw the Amendment to Cyber Crimes Bill 2018:
Distancing itself from the “Prevention of Electronic Crimes (Amendment) Bill, 2018”, the Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI)-led government on Friday approached the Senate Secretariat for its withdrawal. The Senate of Pakistan had referred the “Prevention of Electronic Crimes (Amendment) Bill, 2018″ to the Senate Standing Committee on Information Technology and Telecommunication on September 19, 2018 for consideration and report (Report of the committee to be presented in the house on 19th November, 2018 or before).

Google chief executive Sundar Pichai has said a censored search app in China could serve over “99% of queries,” in rare public comments about the controversial proposal.Mr Pichai told a conference in San Francisco the plan was in the “very early” stages and may not progress. Google’s possible return to China – a market it abandoned over censorship concerns – was first leaked in August.

UK cyber-centre thwarts hostile hackers:
The UK’s top cyber-defence centre has stopped Britain falling victim to almost 1,200 attacks in the last two years, its annual review reveals. The National Cyber Security Centre (NCSC) was currently defeating about 10 attacks every week, it said. Most of the attacks were carried out by state-sponsored hackers employed by hostile nations, it added.

Paul Allen: Microsoft co-founder and billionaire dies aged 65:
Paul Allen, who co-founded Microsoft, has died aged 65 from complications of non-Hodgkin’s lymphoma. He had revealed the disease’s return only two weeks ago, after previously being treated for it in 2009.He had said he and his doctors were “optimistic” about treatment. His Microsoft co-founder Bill Gates said: “I am heartbroken by the passing of one of my oldest and dearest friends… Personal computing would not have existed without him.”

Snapchat adds selfie filters for cats:
Snapchat’s augmented-reality selfie filters now work on cats, the photo-sharing app has announced. Previously, its facial-recognition technology could apply the filters to only humans and some breeds of dog. Now, cat owners can use Snapchat’s Lenses to decorate their pet with hats, glasses and slices of bread.

Facebook tool makes UK political ads ‘transparent’:
From today, if you want to advertise a political cause on Facebook in the UK, you’ll have to obey new rules. You will need to prove your identity and location to the company, and each ad will carry a message saying who paid for it. There will also be an online archive, showing all of your previous ads, roughly how much you spent, and who they have reached. The archive can be searched by anyone, whether or not they are a Facebook member.

Bloodhound supersonic car hits financial roadblock:
The project to race a car at over 1,000mph has run into a financial roadblock with the company behind the venture going into administration. The Bloodhound supersonic vehicle is all but built but needs a £25m investment if it is to break records on a dried-out lakebed in South Africa. The administrators, FRP Advisory LLP, have already begun to talk to potential suitors and want to hear from others.

Virgin Media faces ‘power issue’:
Virgin Media says it is investigating a problem which has left many customers in London without internet access and TV services. The company tweeted that the problem “might be fixed this evening”, but said a separate “system issue” left it unable to provide more information. The problems were first reported on tracking website Down Detector at about 16:00 BST.

UK seeks to secure smart home gadgets:

The UK has published a voluntary code of practice for manufacturers that shows how they can proof their creations against common attacks. It aims to stop gadgets being hijacked and used to mount cyber-attacks – and stamp out designs that let cyber-thieves steal data.
