Mobile Phone Imports Increase by 4.58% in First Three Months of FY2018-19:
Mobile phone imports witnessed a 4.58% growth in the first quarter of the current fiscal year (July-September) 2018-19. Imports ended up costing $199.223 million to the national exchequer as compared to $190.499 million during the same period last year. Mobile phone imports in September 2018, which stood at $62.306 million, registered a 1.47 percent growth as compared to $61.406 million imports in September 2017.

PTCL Organizes Breast Cancer Awareness Drive for Its Employees:
Pakistan Telecommunication Company Limited (PTCL) organized a Breast Cancer Awareness drive under The Pink Club, whereby an exclusive session for all female staff and female family members of male staff was held. The session featured the real life story of a Breast Cancer survivor, Mrs. Khanum Mumtaz Mirza, who is mother of a PTCL staff member. Mrs. Mirza talked about her journey of how she conquered the disease by undergoing the difficult process of diagnosis, treatment, surgery and post-operative care, along with the psychological repercussions of the disease.

Samsung Sues its Own Brand Ambassador for Using iPhone X:
It’s more than usual to see high-end brands tossing tons of money at advertisements, or paying influential people – the brand ambassadors – in a region to do positive publicity for their products. Earlier, the company paid Maroon 5 lead singer Adam Levine to use Samsung electronics in public and also David Ferrer – a well-known tennis player. Google sacks dozens over sexual harassment:
Google has sacked 48 people including 13 senior managers over sexual harassment claims since 2016. In a letter to employees, chief executive Sundar Pichai said the tech giant was taking a “hard line” on inappropriate conduct.

Portrait by AI program sells for $432,000:
An artwork created by an artificially intelligent program has been sold at auction for $432,000 (£337,000). The final price is far higher than the $7,000-$10,000 estimate put on it by Christie’s in New York before the sale. The painting, called Portrait of Edmond Belamy, was created by a Paris-based art collective called Obvious.

Facebook fined £500,000 for Cambridge Analytica scandal:
Facebook has been fined £500,000 by the UK’s data protection watchdog for its role in the Cambridge Analytica data scandal. The Information Commissioner’s Office (ICO) said Facebook had let a “serious breach” of the law take place. The fine is the maximum allowed under the old data protection rules that applied before GDPR took effect in May.

Second hack attack on BA website uncovered:
More than 185,000 people may have had payment card details stolen in a hack attack on the BA website. The victims were caught out by a website compromise that had gone undetected for months. BA only discovered the breach while investigating a breach of its website in September, which affected 380,000 transactions.

Twitter earnings boosted by major sports broadcasts:
Coverage of major football and baseball games in the US helped Twitter generate better-than-expected sales and profits in the third quarter. The social network said revenue jumped 29% to $758m in the period, beating analyst estimates. But its total number of users declined as it closed “spammy and suspicious” accounts, and it forecast further falls.

Google drops plans for Berlin campus after protests:
Google has dropped plans to open a large campus in a trendy district of Berlin that were strongly opposed by local campaigners. The US tech giant planned to set up an incubator for start-ups in Kreuzberg, but on Wednesday said the site would go to two local charities. A spokesman did not say if local opposition had played a role in the decision.

How WhatsApp is being abused in Brazil’s elections:
Political campaigners in Brazil have used software that scrapes Facebook for citizens’ phone numbers, and then automatically sends them WhatsApp messages and adds them to WhatsApp groups. Almost three weeks ago, 147 million voters in the country went to the polls for legislative elections and the first round of the presidential elections. This Sunday, they will decide between far-right candidate Jair Bolsonaro and the left-wing Workers’ Party candidate Fernando Haddad, in the second round of the presidential election.

Tesla delivers ‘historic’ $311m profit:
Tesla has reported a quarterly profit for just the third time in its 15-year history. The electric car-maker made a record $311.5m (£241m) in the three months to 30 September, as the pace of car deliveries accelerated. The result is a victory for chief executive Elon Musk, who had promised a profit to investors earlier this year.

Facebook removes 8.7m child nudity images in three months:
Facebook has said that 8.7 million images of child nudity were removed by its moderators in just three months. The social network said that it had developed new software to automatically flag possible sexualised images of children. It was put into service last year but has only become public now.

Cathay Pacific data hack hits 9.4 million passengers:
Cathay Pacific says the personal data of up to 9.4 million passengers have been accessed in the latest security breach to hit the aviation industry. Passport numbers, email addresses and expired credit card details were among the data leaked. Chief executive Rupert Hogg apologised and said there was “no evidence” the information had been misused.

BT appoints Worldpay’s Philip Jansen as new chief executive:
BT has named Philip Jansen as its new chief executive as the telecoms group seeks to revive its fortunes. He replaces Gavin Patterson, who is stepping down after the company said a change of leadership was needed. BT has been criticized for not investing enough in its broadband network and faced a £500m accounting scandal in 2017.
