After years of unchecked growth, Netflix suffered a slump in subscriber growth in the second quarter of 2019, losing around 130,000 U.S. subscribers. It has now released its Q3 results and hit sci-fi series Stranger Things has helped the company bounce back and record a noticeable gain in its international subscriber base.
It now has 158.3 million paying subscribers, 60.6 million of which are in the U.S. and another 97.7 million overseas. The return to subscriber growth comes at a crucial time for Netflix, with competitiors Disney+, HBO Max and Apple+ all set to enter the streaming market imminently. The following chart shows Netflix’s subscriber growth since 2012, nicely illustrating that its international expansion has been a major growth driver in recent years.
