A group of think tanks comprising the NewClimate Institute, the Climate Action Network and Germanwatch have released the 2020 Climate Change Performance Index which ranks 57 countries on national climate change action. The categories involved were emissions, renewable energy, energy use and policy. When it comes to the latter, Australia is rock bottom of the index.
The report stated that the re-elected Morrison government has become a regressive force in negotiations while it has continued to worsen its performance at national and international level. The United States has also regressed under President Trump and he notably took his country out of the Paris agreement. It comes as little surprise that the U.S. also had a dismal score, just marginally better than Australia. At the other end of the scale, Portugal was named the best performing country for climate change policy.
