Democracy watchdog organization Freedom House has released its annual ranking of the world’s most free and suppressed nations. This year’s report was grim and it found that freedom levels declined for the 15th year running. In 2020, 75 percent of the world’s populaton lived in a country that saw its freedom score deteriorate with India’s slide from “Free” to “Partly Free” particularly worrying.
The best scores in 2020 were recorded in Northern Europe with Sweden, Norway and Finland leading the way for freedom with scores of 100. The top-five was rounded off by New Zealand and Canada with the U.S. trailing due to a deterioration in its score which fell to 83. This year, the worst countries for freedom were Eritrea, South Sudan and Syria. When territories are included in the analysis, Freedom House placed Tibet last in the ranking.
