Pakistan’s agricultural potential holds the key to ensuring food security, economic prosperity, and sustainable development.
Pakistan Hitech Hybrid Seed Association (PHHSA) Chairman Shahzad Ali Malik emphasised this during discussions with a delegation of agricultural experts led by Prof Dr. Muhammad Arshad Javed, Head of Plant Breeding and Genetics at Punjab University in Lahore on Sunday (March 24)
Malik highlighted the need for a dual strategy: horizontal and vertical growth. Horizontal expansion involves tapping into untapped areas like Cholistan’s barren lands, potentially increasing agricultural output significantly. By efficiently reclaiming and utilising such land, Pakistan can bolster its agricultural productivity.
Equally crucial is vertical growth, achieved through the adoption of high-quality seeds and modern farming practices. This approach not only enhances per-acre yield but also aligns with sustainable farming practices, addressing the nation’s growing food security needs without excessive land use.
Malik commended the recent crackdown by the Prime Minister on those selling substandard seeds, emphasising the importance of quality seed usage. The establishment of the National Seed Development and Regulatory Authority reflects a proactive stance towards improving agricultural standards. PHHSA recognises the government’s efforts in boosting the agricultural economy, emphasising the significance of collaboration between the public and private sectors.
Advocating for stakeholder representation in the National Seed Development and Regulatory Authority, PHHSA aims to contribute expertise towards shaping policies and regulations that foster innovation and quality assurance in the seed industry. Incorporating stakeholders’ perspectives, especially from reputable associations like PHHSA, can facilitate the formulation of comprehensive strategies to address challenges hindering agricultural productivity.
