How mobile phone networks are embracing AI:

Our mobile phones are getting a whole lot smarter, but what about the telecoms networks they run on? Last week, Apple became the latest mobile phone firm to announce that it will be adding artificial intelligence (AI) to its handsets’ operating system. Called Apple Intelligence, and also due to be incorporated into the phones’ Siri chatbot, it aims to make them easier and quicker to use. And turn Siri into even more of a personal assistant. It follows after Samsung’s Galaxy AI, and Google’s Gemini AI for its own Pixel handsets. This increased of use AI means phones will be doing a lot more computing, and that means they’ll produce and use a lot more data. This is going to put more strain on the mobile phone networks, such as the UK’s O2, EE, Vodafone and Three.

Don’t blame us for people suffering – London hospital hackers:

The cyber-criminals responsible for causing major disruption at London hospitals say they are “sorry” for all the harm caused but are “not to blame”. The ransomware gang spoke to the Media on encrypted chat service qTox attempting to justify the attack as a form of political protest. Qilin, which has a well established record of attempting to extort money, claims in this instance it carried out a cyber-attack as revenge for the UK government’s actions in an undisclosed war. Experts are sceptical, however, with Jen Ellis, from the organisation Ransomware Task Force, telling the BBC that “cyber-criminals like this gang lie routinely.” “Where they are from and why they have carried out the attack is secondary to the harm being caused right now to patients and hospital staff,” she added. The hack has led to more than 1,000 operations and appointments being postponed and a critical incident being declared.

Chip-maker Nvidia became the world’s most valuable company after its share price climbed to an all-time high on Tuesday. It is now worth $3.34tn (£2.63tn), with the price having nearly doubled since the start of this year. The stock ended the trading day at nearly $136, up 3.5%, making it more valuable than fellow tech giant Microsoft. It overtook Apple earlier this month. The Californian company’s meteoric rise has been fuelled by its dominance of what analysts call the “new gold or oil in the tech sector” – the chips needed for artificial intelligence (AI).

TikTok faces fresh US pressure over child privacy:

The US Federal Trade Commission (FTC) has referred a complaint against TikTok and its Chinese parent company ByteDance over potential violations of children’s privacy to the Department of Justice (DOJ). The FTC says its own investigation “uncovered reason to believe” that the firms “are violating or are about to violate the law”. In a statement to News, a TikTok spokesperson said they were disappointed by the decision. The case is separate from legislation passed earlier this year to ban TikTok in the US if ByteDance does not sell the business. The regulator said its investigation focused on potential violations of the FTC Act and the Children’s Online Privacy Protection Act (COPPA). The FTC also said it does not usually announce that it has referred a complaint to the DOJ but in this instance felt doing so was in the public interest. COPPA governs the collection, use and disclosure of personal information by online services about children under 13-years-old.

London cinema drops AI-written film after backlash:

A central London cinema has cancelled a private screening of a film which was entirely written using artificial intelligence (AI) following a public backlash. The Prince Charles Cinema in Soho was due to host the world premiere of The Last Screenwriter, which was created by ChatGPT, on Sunday. However, when concerns were raised by people about “the use of AI in place of a writer”, the cinema announced that the screening had been axed. In a statement shared on Instagram, it said the response by its customers “speaks to a wider issue within the industry”. Created by Peter Luisi, the movie has been marketed as the “first feature film written entirely by AI”. It follows a celebrated screenwriter called Jack who finds his world shaken when he encounters a cutting-edge AI scriptwriting system. After initially being sceptical, Jack realises the AI matches his skills and surpasses his empathy and understanding of human emotions.

Building a $2bn online game by breaking the rules:

Ask anyone to name a successful online multiplayer game and you’re likely to get a handful of names in response. Fortnite, Call of Duty, League of Legends, Roblox, Helldivers II. But there’s another title, celebrating its 10th anniversary this year, that’s been a relatively quiet success. The Elder Scrolls Online (ESO), a spin-off of the hugely popular fantasy RPG series from Fallout makers Bethesda, has been played by 24 million people and made $2bn since it launched. Developer Zenimax Online Studios began work on the game in 2007 following the huge success of single-player game The Elder Scrolls: Oblivion two years earlier. At the time, massively multiplayer online role-playing games, or MMORPGs, were all the rage, with World of Warcraft, Everquest and Dark Age of Camelot attracting millions of players.

Is Elon Musk worth his $56bn Tesla pay package?:

Elon Musk might, once again, get his own way. His Tesla pay deal – worth up to $56bn (£44bn) depending on the firm’s share price – which has now been backed by shareholders is 75% of the entire spending for schools in England in 2024-25 (£60bn) and around a quarter of the budget for the NHS (£192bn). To his many admirers, Mr Musk is worth every single cent which comes his way – and shareholders agreed, with around 72% of the voting shares backing the deal. His businesses include Tesla, SpaceX, X (formerly Twitter), Starlink, Neuralink and X.ai, his latest AI project. You could argue Tesla opened up the US market for electric vehicles, SpaceX has just sent the world’s most powerful rocket into space, and a man who volunteered to be the first human to be implanted with a Neuralink microchip into his brain can now control a computer using his thoughts. Today, the $56bn question is: would this portfolio have been as successful without him?

The battle for Gen Z social shoppers:

Shopping habits have not been the same since the Covid pandemic and resulting lockdowns. For many, and particularly younger shoppers, it saw the lines blur between social media and e-commerce. Unable to shop in person, and with TikTok downloads soaring, a trend began that would go on to be described as a cultural phenomenon: #TikTokMadeMeBuyIt. The hashtag, where users post what they’ve bought thanks to recommendations about products on the app, has now been posted more than seven billion times. For Lilia Souri and AJ Pulvirenti who co-host the marketing podcast “Gen Z on Gen Z” by creative agency Movers+Shakers, TikTok is winning with their generation. “It’s become one of the biggest because of how advanced the algorithm is, and because, before TikTok Shop even was created, we were seeing shopping behaviours happening on TikTok as a whole,” says 27-year-old Lilia Souri.
