In 2024 England’s wheat crop dips
Wet weather has taken its toll on wheat production in England, with the crop initially estimated to be 10 million tonnes in 2024, down 22 percent from 12.75 million in 2023 on lower yield and area, according to a report from the United Kingdom’s Department for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs. Vietnamese sugar cane tops Asean in productivity
The Vietnamese sugar industry has led the region in sugar productivity for the first time, according to the Vietnam Sugarcane and Sugar Association (VSSA).
Thanks to the promotion of mechanisation in production such as land preparation, harvesting, spraying pesticides, technologies of the Fourth Industry Revolution (Industry 4.0) to farming, along with the application of trade defence measures, the sugar industry has recorded a significant growth, it said. Vietnam’s sugar yield for the 2023-2024 crop reached 6.79 tonnes per ha, higher than other key producers in the region such as Thailand, Indonesia and the Philippines.
Iran’s oil output rises in September: report
The Organization of Petroleum Exporting Countries (OPEC) in its latest report, published on Monday, has said Iran produced 3.316 million barrels per day (bpd) of crude oil in September, registering a 21,000-bpd increase compared to the previous month. Based on the OPEC data, the increase in Iran’s oil production comes as the total production by the members of the organization decreased 604,000 bpd in the mentioned month. As reported, Iran has maintained its place as OPEC’s third-biggest oil producer after Saudi Arabia and Iraq. Based on secondary sources, Iran produced 3.295 million bpd of crude oil in August, the report said. The Islamic Republic’s average crude output for the third quarter of 2024 stood at 3.3 million bpd indicating a 62,000-bpd increase compared to the figure for the second quarter of the year.
India can secure the future of its faltering tea industry
Ask someone which country has the highest per capita tea consumption and their most likely answer will be China. It is the world’s largest producer by far, with 3.18 million tonnes made last year, and is seen as the place from where tea consumption spread across the world. On September 25, 1660, the British diarist Samuel Pepys wrote, “I did send for a cup of tee (a China drink) of which I never had drunk before.” After China, number two would seem to be India, the world’s second largest producer, with 1.36 million tonnes. This is the home of chai, tea brewed with milk and sugar, a drink rapidly spreading in popularity across the world, much to the bemusement of Indians who encounter it as Chai Tea Lattes.
Egypt eyes gas production rise
Egypt plans to increase natural gas production from several key concession areas, including its giant Zohr field, in 2025, Petroleum Minister Karim Badawi said on Monday. The government aims to ramp up output at Zohr by drilling new wells starting in the first quarter of 2025, according to a ministry statement. Production from the field remained stable at around 2 billion cubic feet per day (bcf/d) in the fiscal year 2023-24, which ended in June. Zohr, once a game-changer that turned Egypt from a net gas importer to an exporter, peaked at 3.2 bcf/d in 2019 but has since seen output decline to 1.9 bcf/d in early 2024. The drop was mainly due to foreign oil companies’ hesitance to invest as Egypt accumulated billions in arrears. However, in August, Prime Minister Mostafa Madbouly announced that his government had a clear plan to restore and increase production levels in cooperation with foreign partners.
