  • Awareness, training and financing can help drive digital adoption in Pakistan

The dental profession has undergone a transformative evolution over the last few decades, driven largely by advancements in digital technology. From diagnosis to treatment planning and execution, the integration of digital devices has revolutionized the way dental care is delivered, improving accuracy, efficiency, and patient outcomes.

Digital imaging

Traditional X-rays, which were once the gold standard in dental imaging, are being increasingly replaced or supplemented by digital imaging technologies including

  • Digital X-rays offer higher image quality, reduced radiation exposure, and instant image viewing. Dentists can zoom in for more precise diagnosis and easily share the images with specialists or patients.
  • Cone Beam Computed Tomography provides 3D imaging, giving an accurate, in-depth view of the patient’s bone structure, soft tissues and nerve pathways.
  • Intraoral Cameras is a small, handheld devices that allow dentists to capture high-resolution images of a patient’s mouth.
CAD/CAM technology

One of the most important breakthroughs in restorative dentistry is CAD/CAM technology, which allows dental restorations to be designed and fabricated outside the patient’s mouth, right in the dental office. This spares patients the discomfort of having to keep their mouths open for extended periods during the restoration process.

3D printing in dentistry

The advent of 3D printing has introduced another layer of innovation to dental practices and labs. Its applications include creation of highly accurate models of the patient’s teeth, which can be used for diagnostic and planning purposes. Dentures and temporary crowns can be printed with precision, offering faster turnaround times and better customisation. For implant placement, 3D-printed surgical guides help in ensuring precise positioning and depth.

Digital impressions

Traditional impressions, which were often uncomfortable for patients due to the use of messy materials in impression trays, are now being replaced by digital impressions. These are taken using a handheld scanner that creates a precise 3D model of the teeth and gums, eliminating the need for messy materials or trays. Digital impressions also minimize errors caused by human handling and environmental factors.

Laser dentistry

Although lasers are not a new technology, they have become more refined and increasingly adopted in dental care. They provide minimally invasive solutions for a variety of treatments, such as gum reshaping and teeth whitening. Traditionally, decayed teeth were treated by removing cavities with noisy and annoying dental drills, which used to be uncomfortable for patients. Now, lasers offer a quieter, more comfortable alternative, replacing the need for drills in majority of cases.

Robotics in dental surgery

Robotic technology is making its way into surgical dentistry. Robotic assistance in implant placement is one such area where the precision of robots ensures optimal outcomes. Robotic systems enable dentists to perform less invasive surgeries, leading to quicker recovery and less pain for the patient.

Artificial intelligence in dentistry

AI is gradually being incorporated into many aspects of dental care. AI-powered tools enhance diagnostic accuracy by analyzing X-rays and scans to detect cavities, gum disease, and other issues more efficiently. It aids in treatment planning for complex procedures simulating outcomes for precision.

Digital technology in dentistry has not gained popularity in Pakistan for several reasons. A major factor is the lack of awareness among both dentists and patients about the benefits of digital devices. There is an acute shortage of training programmes to equip dentists with the skills needed to use these technologies effectively. Financial constraints further limit the adoption of advanced equipment, as generally dentists cannot afford their high costs.

To overcome these barriers, banks and financial institutions must play a proactive role. Offering affordable financing options, subsidies, or specific loan programs will help make digital technology more accessible. Encouraging its adoption will ultimately improve the quality of dental care in Pakistan, ensuring that patients benefit from the precision, efficiency, and comfort that digital advancements bring to modern dentistry.
