- Festivities marked by fireworks, rallies, and cultural celebrations reflecting the UAE’s values of hospitality and generosity
Interview with Mr. Zaheer Ahmed, UAE-based PakistaniÂ
PAGE: Tell me something about yourself, please:
Zaheer Ahmed: I was born in Karachi and got my early education in my home country. I worked for Pakistan International Airlines and now I have been living in the UAE for last 14 years working as an Aircraft Engineer.
PAGE: How would you describe the National Day of the UAE?
Zaheer Ahmed: It’s the important day in the UAE like we celebrate 14th August in Pakistan. They declared this day as Eidul-al-Etihad lately instead of National Day. Fireworks, car rallies and dance shows are the most common activities in all Emirates. Fireworks are normally held in the most crowded areas like Dubai and Abu Dhabi downtowns. The car rallies are organised on the vital roads and highways of the UAE. Alongside, the cultural dance is also showcased in the national day events. The schools specially organise the events where children wear the national dress and chant the national anthem and songs. Also, in organisations like Emirates and other small and big organisations, the national day is celebrated with the national anthem, promoting their culture and history.
PAGE: Could you tell us about the celebrations on the National Day of the UAE?
Zaheer Ahmed: The cake cutting ceremony is quite fabulous. They showcase their history, culture and ambition. The vibe of these ceremonies are really great. People wear the national dresses and flags. They also serve their cultural food on such occasions. In the Emirates Airlines Headquarters and all other organization’s head offices. The magnificent events are held where the employees and their family members can also take part. The fireworks are well organized and informed to the residents beforehand so they can visit to enjoy the moment. The young Emiratis are quite enthusiastic and they decorate their vehicles with the national leader’s portrait and flags and they play their national song quite loud in the car.
I believe the national day here is no different than Pakistan. However, it’s more organised and secure where everybody feels respect and secure.
PAGE: How would you comment on the display of Emirati culture as part of the celebrations?
Zaheer Ahmed: I think their culture is quite rich and history is also quite old. They have witnessed many eras. They used to explore the pearls from seabed before exploration of oil and gas. Their ancestors faced many challenges and out of that they survived successfully.
The most important value in their culture is generosity and hospitality on which they still firmly believe. Alongside, people also lookout for the shopping during the holidays where many big stores declare great discounts and people rush to their favourite wearables. So accordingly, one would find the roads, malls and parks fully packed; everyone has to gear up and plan beforehand so they could also enjoy.
