  • Dentists promote oral health awareness, preventive care, and policy advocacy to improve public health in Pakistan

Dentists play a pivotal role in public health, extending far beyond the confines of their clinics. As healthcare professionals, they are uniquely positioned to address oral health issues, which are largely overlooked but have a deep influence on general health and quality of life. In a country like Pakistan, where access to healthcare is limited and awareness about oral hygiene is usually inadequate, dentists significantly contribute to public health initiatives and educate communities.

Promoting oral health awareness

One of the most important roles dentists play, is raising awareness about the importance of oral health. Majority of people in Pakistan is unaware of the link between oral health and systemic diseases such as diabetes, cardiovascular diseases, and respiratory infections.

Dentists in community dentistry departments of various dental schools organize community workshops, school programs, and social media campaigns to educate the public about proper brushing techniques, the importance of regular dental check-ups, and the dangers of habits like tobacco use and excessive sugar consumption.

Preventive dental care programmes

Preventive care is the cornerstone of public health. Dentists collaborate with local governments, NGOs, and schools to implement preventive care programmes. They advocate for and participate in fluoride treatment programs in schools, dental sealant initiatives, and free oral health screenings in underserved areas. These programs can help reduce the prevalence of cavities, gum diseases, and other oral health issues, particularly among children and low-income populations.

Advocating for policy changes

Dentists have their professional association which should play its role. It can use its expertise to advocate for policy changes that improve public health. They can push for the inclusion of oral health education in school curricula, the regulation of sugary products, and the implementation of tobacco control policies. Engaging with policymakers, dentists can help create an environment that supports better oral health outcomes for the entire population.

Collaborating with other healthcare professionals

Oral health is deeply interrelated with general health of an individual. Dentists can collaborate with general physicians, nutritionists, and other healthcare professionals to provide holistic care to patients.

They can work with diabetes specialists to educate patients about the link between gum disease and diabetes or with pediatricians to promote early childhood oral health practices. Such collaborations can lead to better health outcomes and a more integrated healthcare system.

Participating in tobacco cessation initiatives

Tobacco consumption stands as one of the most significant public health challenges the world has ever encountered, claiming over 7 million lives annually. It is now widely acknowledged that assisting tobacco users in quitting is a responsibility of healthcare professionals, and the role of dentists in this effort has gained global recognition. Dentists often share a long-standing, trusted relationship with their patients and interact with them on a regular basis. In Pakistan, dentists will wholeheartedly perform this national duty if policymakers in the health sector and dental curriculum designers take this matter seriously and consider integrating tobacco cessation counseling and intervention into the dental curriculum.

Advancing education through technology

In the digital age, dentists can use technology to reach a wider audience. They can create educational videos, host webinars, and use social media platforms to share tips on oral hygiene, debunk myths, and answer common questions. Tele-dentistry can also be utilized to provide consultations and advice to people in remote areas, making dental care more accessible.

Addressing cultural and social barriers

In Pakistan, cultural and social barriers often prevent people from seeking dental care. Some communities may prioritize other health issues over oral health, while others may rely on traditional remedies. Community dentists engage with community leaders and influencers to address these barriers and promote the importance of professional dental care. By understanding and respecting cultural nuances, dentists can build trust and encourage more people to seek treatment.

Volunteering for public health campaigns

Dentists volunteer their time and expertise for public health campaigns, such as free dental camps, oral cancer screenings, and awareness drives during national health weeks. These initiatives not only provide immediate care to those in need but also raise awareness about the importance of oral health on a larger scale.

In Pakistan, where healthcare resources are scarce, dentists are indispensable for public health. They are already making a substantial difference in building a healthier, more informed, and resilient society, and their potential to do even more is immense if they receive adequate support.
