Amazon, Google and other tech giants pledge action on fraud:
Fake adverts and romance scams were targeted as technology giants backed an online-fraud charter at a meeting with Home Secretary James Cleverly. Pledges include measures designed to protect users of online dating services from flirting with fakes. Amazon, eBay, Facebook, Google, Instagram, LinkedIn, Match Group, Microsoft, Snapchat, TikTok and YouTube backed the charter. Fraud accounts for about two-fifths of all crime in England and Wales. The joint fraud taskforce, chaired by Security Minister Tom Tugendhat, would hold the companies to account for delivering the actions, the government said. The new Online Safety Act, which applies to search engines and user-to-user services such as social-media platforms, also requires companies to mitigate the risks of fraud and, for some, prevent fraudulent advertising.

Will Tesla’s truck recover from its shattering start?:
The last time Tesla boss Elon Musk took the stage to promote the electric car company’s planned “cybertruck”, its window ended up being smashed. It was a shattering debut for the vehicle, meant to stake Tesla’s claim to the lucrative US truck market. Four years later, as the company starts delivering the futuristic product to buyers, that problem has been fixed. But questions linger over whether the truck’s unusual design will help or hurt its chances of success. Mr Musk has said the truck – which is angular and made of rocket-like, bullet-proof steel materials – might be the company’s “best product ever”.
Meta takes down China-based network of thousands of fake accounts:
Meta says it recently removed a network of thousands of fake and misleading accounts based in China. The users posed as Americans and sought to spread polarising content about US politics and US-China relations. Among the topics the network posted about were abortion, culture war issues and aid to Ukraine. Meta did not link the profiles to Beijing officials, but it has seen an increase in such networks based in China ahead of the 2024 US elections. China is now the third-biggest geographical source of such networks, the company said, behind Russia and Iran. Hackers are increasing their attacks on Booking.com customers by posting adverts on dark web forums asking for help finding victims. Since at least March, customers have been tricked into sending money to cyber-criminals. New research shows the sneaky tactics being used by the unknown hackers.

Inactive Google accounts to be deleted from Friday:
If you’ve got an old Google account that you have not used for a couple of years then it could soon be deleted. The tech giant is going to be getting rid of them, starting from Friday, under its inactive account policy. The company said it would take a phased approach, starting with accounts that “were created and never used again”. Simply signing into an account or sending an email should be enough to keep it active. Google said the change was because of security reasons, highlighting that forgotten and unused accounts are more likely to be compromised. A Google account gives users access to most Google products, such as email service Gmail and video sharing site YouTube, using the same username and password.

The drone landed in-between the islands of Hoy and Graemsay and has now sunk to the bottom of the sea. A spokesperson said the craft was not carrying any cargo at the time and there was no damage to people or property. A spokesman for Royal Mail said that island residents would continue to receive their mail by the daily ferry service that operates between Stromness, Graemsay, and Hoy.

The breach disrupted housing benefit claims, council tax payments, leisure centre bookings among other things, according to the Local Democracy Reporting Service.
