Karimabad is the capital of Hunza valley, in Pakistan’s northern Gilgit-Baltistan territory. Baltit is the old name of Karimabad. It is named when prince Karim Aga Khan, the spiritual head of Shia Ismaili Nizari community. People still refer Karimabad as Baltit. The Guardian ranked it as one of the 5 “Best tourist Sites” in Pakistan. Each Baltit Fort and Karimabad village received the globe Award of tourism in 2000 when Indonesia, Australia, India and United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland and different countries competed.
Karimabad town, situated on the West Bank of the Hunza river, is within the Northern Areas of the Pakistan. Access is by hill road from Gilgit.
The town has developed into a tourist place, following the development of the karakoram highway, with variety of shopping complexes dealing in handicrafts, hotels, restaurants, and travel agencies.
The economy relies on agriculture with crops like rice, corn (maize), fruits, and vegetables grown under irrigated conditions.
The landmarks around the town are the Baltit Fort, queen Victoria Monument, Channel Walk and the snow clad mountains of Rakaposhi and glaciers of Ulter Nala.
